The ACLU of Virginia is taking legal actions against the Commonwealth of Virginia, Gov. Ralph Northam, and state and local officials to ensure they are using their full authority to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in prisons, jails and correctional facilities and prevent more illnesses and deaths.

The ACLU of Virginia sent letters to correctional facilities and detention centers across the Commonwealth urging these agencies' leadership to implement without delay evidence-based and proactive plans for the prevention and management of COVID-19.

The ACLU of Virginia, as part of the Virginia Pretrial Justice Coalition, sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary and House Courts of Justice Committees to express our concerns surrounding Virginia's pretrial and bail practices and call for more transparency.
