“This victory is an enormous step towards ending felony disenfranchisement in Virginia, one that Virginians can advance even further at the ballot box this fall.”

“It should not have taken a lawsuit for the King George County School Board to do the right thing,” said ACLU-VA Staff Attorney Julia Kahn. 

“The court’s order makes clear once and for all that the Commonwealth cannot deprive hundreds of thousands of eligible voters their right to register and cast their votes,” said ACLU-VA Legal Director Eden Heilman.

“The First Amendment and Equal Access Act protect all students, and the school board cannot pick and choose who the rules apply to," said ACLU-VA Staff Attorney Julia Kahn.

“Today the Court of Appeals reaffirmed what courts across the country have already found: that messages conveyed on vanity license plates constitute private speech protected by the First Amendment,” said ACLU-VA Legal Director Eden Heilman.

“We are elated that the Fourth Circuit saw through the Trump administration’s blatant attempt to bend the law to their will and rejected their bid to re-detain our client thousands of miles away from his family in Virginia,” said ACLU-VA Legal Director Eden Heilman.

“Everyone – regardless of immigration status – should be safe to seek medical care, and nothing can justify what we see in that video,” said ACLU of Virginia Policy Director Chris Kaiser.

“Dragnets like these are precisely why Virginia lawmakers passed legislation to rein in Virginia law enforcement from using Virginia resources to carry out federal civil immigration enforcement,” said ACLU-VA Policy Director Chris Kaiser.

“Although we’re relieved that our young clients were finally released today, until ORR follows the law, we will keep fighting for the safety and freedom of immigrant children,” said ACLU-VA Executive Director Mary Bauer.
