Gov. Ralph Northam rightly vetoed Senate Bill 1156, which prohibits "sanctuary" localities in Virginia, and House Bill 2270, which requires sheriffs to report information regarding incarcerated and undocumented immigrants to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The ACLU of Virginia strongly opposed these bills and called on the governor to veto them in a February 25, 2019 letter.
These anti-immigration bills do nothing to promote public safety, but they do send a chilling message to people who are immigrants and ultimately make our communities less safe. The ACLU of Virginia commends the governor for vetoing these unnecessary, harmful bills.
