RICHMOND, Va. – In response to Virginia State Board of Health’s vote to target transgender athletes, ACLU of Virginia Senior Transgender Rights Attorney Wyatt Rolla (they/them) released the following statement:

“The Board of Health’s vote today to target transgender athletes isn’t just beyond the scope of its authority: it’s a misguided resuscitation of a proposal Virginia’s lawmakers already rejected three times. It’s especially ironic that this coordinated political attack is being executed in the name of protecting female athletes, because policing athletes’ bodies will hurt – not protect – girls who are forced to undergo invasive physical exams and share their medical records with authorities questioning their gender. Today’s vote is about politics, not health, and Virginians deserve better.”
