RICHMOND, Va. – In response to five Northern Virginia school divisions’ announcement that they will maintain policies that uphold Title IX, rather than bow to pressure from the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR), ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Mary Bauer released the following statement:

“President Trump has engaged in a relentless campaign to abuse federal powers, and now his Department of Education is trying to pretend that Title IX means the opposite of its plain language. But the law hasn’t changed: Virginia schools are legally required to create safe environments that don’t discriminate against their students, and Virginians turned out in force across five districts last week to make sure their school boards do exactly that. By announcing today that they’ll maintain their existing policies, these school districts are proving once again that Virginians are committed to the rule of law – even if the Trump administration isn’t.”
