Updated: Governor's Amendments to Electric Chair Bill Would Allow Creation of Secret Execution Drugs

The ACLU of Virginia urged Gov. Terry McAuliffe to veto five bills approved by the Virginia General Assembly in the 2016 session. These include:

• House Bill 815, sponsored by Del. Jackson H. Miller (R-Manassas) - The governor suggested amendments to this bill on April 11, 2016. These amendments would authorize the Department of Corrections to concoct secret execution drugs and experiment with them on human beings. The General Assembly will note on the amendments on April 20, 2016. Tell your legislators to reject the governor's amendments.
• House Bill 587, sponsored by Del. Charles D. Poindexter (R-Glade Hill) - Would have denied local governments the right to make their own decisions about Civil War monuments within their borders. The governor vetoed this bill on March 10, 2016.
• Senate Bill 41, sponsored by Sen. Bill Carrico (R-Grayson) - Would codify viewpoint discrimination by singling out for special protection people who oppose same-sex marriage. The governor vetoed this bill on March 30, 2016.
• House Bill 481, sponsored by Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Manassas) - Would unfairly target the immigrant community and expose sheriffs and local correctional authorities to costly litigation. The governor vetoed this bill on April 1, 2016.
• House Bill 516, sponsored by Del. R. Steven Landes (R-Verona) - Would require public schools to notify parents of instructional materials that include "sexually explicit content." The governor vetoed this bill on April 4, 2016.
