Responding to a claim from one of Congressman Dave Brat’s constituents who was not allowed to bring her sign (a 6-by-12 sign with no profane or discriminatory language) into his May 9 town hall, we sent a letter to remind Brat that denying his constituent’s ability to express her beliefs at a public event is denying her constitutional right to free speech.
In the letter, we reiterated that it is unconstitutional to ban all signs, especially when the reason for the ban (better sight line and litter prevention) served no governmental interest and did not justify infringing on the First Amendment rights of his constituents.
