Our Organizing team isn’t just about action — it’s about connection.

Here are seven reasons to join the movement today.

1. You Help Shape Laws — Literally.

Volunteering with ACLU-VA means corresponding directly with legislators. We meet with them in their offices and at lobby days in Richmond. We write them letters and postcards, and help them get to events around the state with community members. Together, we’re making sure elected officials hear loud and clear: Virginians demand reproductive freedom, trans rights, voting rights, and more.

A Black woman with shaved head and glasses held up a card she made to support the repro freedom constitutional amendment.

A community member showed off the card she made at a love letter writing event hosted by Virginians for Reproductive Freedom. She added her voice to urge Virginia lawmakers to support a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom in the Commonwealth.

2. We’re Out in the Community — Not Just Behind Desks.

From Roanoke to Richmond to Virginia Beach, we’ve been meeting folks where they are — literally. Find us at Pride festivals, block parties, and community events across the Commonwealth. One perk: We bring FREE buttons, stickers, and fun swag that will help you start even more conversations about what freedom looks like in Virginia.

3. We Host Monthly “Power Hours” That Are Actually Worth Your Time.

We co-host a virtual “Power Hour” every month with Virginians for Reproductive Freedom (VRF). It’s a one-hour statewide meetup where volunteers get campaign updates, storytelling training, and ways to plug in — plus a whole lot of community and energy. Think Zoom, but actually fun and empowering.

4. We Build Local Power with CLAP Back Teams.

CLAPBack (Community Led Action for People) teams are our newest and boldest grassroots initiative. These hyper-local volunteer squads are organizing in their own communities — fighting censorship, pushing for inclusive policies, and holding local officials accountable. If you’re tired of seeing your school board or city council ignore your rights, this is your crew.

5. You’ll Find Your People.

Our Organizing team isn’t just about action — it’s about connection. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, but we’re united by a shared belief: Everyone deserves dignity, justice, and freedom. You’ll meet passionate, thoughtful, brave folks who share your values and are ready to make real change — with you.

6. You’ll Join a Movement That’s About More Than Protests.

We do the work between the headlines. Whether it’s hosting volunteer trainings, preparing folks to speak at public meetings, or organizing roundtables with impacted communities, we’re focused on long-term movement building. We make change by building a movement fit for a marathon, not a sprint.

7. Because Rights Are on the Line — And the Fight for our Freedoms Needs YOU.

The fight for civil liberties in Virginia is urgent. When our rights aren’t guaranteed at the federal level, it’s even more important that we shore them up at home. Whether it’s protecting abortion access, defending LGBTQ+ students, or standing up to book bans and political censorship, the rights we have in Virginia depend on all of us to advocate for them. And the truth is: we can’t do this without you.

Whether you're new to advocacy or a seasoned pro, our team gives you the tools to make an impact.

Ways to Give

We fight every day in the courts, in the legislature, and in our communities to create a Virginia for all. But we can’t do it alone.

All three amendments to Virginia’s Constitution supported by ACLU of Virginia move forward

"Protecting Virginians’ rights will require amending Virginia’s constitution. Today was the first step of this legislative session in a multi-year process, one that will culminate in Virginians themselves voting on whether to enshrine core civil rights safely out of reach of partisan politics."
