Join the Virginia COVID-19 Justice Coalition for a discussion about how the racial inequities in our criminal legal system have only worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some Virginia lawmakers ignored, amended or voted against legislation that would make the biggest impact on reducing racial disparities in the criminal legal system. We will continue to work with lawmakers until our criminal legal system is just, fair and equitable for all Virginians.
Before new legislation was passed by the General Assembly in 2020, Virginia was one of the most difficult states in which to vote – second only to Mississippi.
Marijuana laws are enforced more harshly on Black people and communities of color. Although some Virginia lawmakers claimed victory for “decriminalizing” marijuana, simple possession is still illegal. Only the penalty has changed.
Voting is essential to our democracy, and it’s important that you are able to exercise this hard-won right while staying safe - especially during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
