Pregnant mother and toddler with disabilities ordered “not to spend another night in Dulles”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – In response to an order by a federal judge in the Eastern District of Virginia in Gyasi v. Scott, an emergency habeas on behalf of a 39-year-old pregnant Ghanian woman experiencing pregnancy complications who has been detained in a windowless room in Dulles Airport with her four-year-old son with disabilities for more than a week, ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Mary Bauer released the following statement:

“Today the court ordered in no uncertain terms that Ms. Gyasi and her son are not to spend another night in Dulles Airport. Ms. Gyasi's health and the viability of her pregnancy have both been endangered for more than a week as a result of the Trump administration's dangerous and unlawful detention practices, and she is just one of a growing number of pregnant people who’ve been detained in the wake of President Trump’s executive order trying to end birthright citizenship. While we’re relieved that Ms. Gyasi and her son will soon be free from this nightmare, no one should be subjected to the inhumane conditions they endured and we will keep fighting the Trump administration’s illegal detention of people without due process.”
