Freedom of speech, of the press, of association, of assembly, and of petition: these most fundamental liberties comprise what we refer to as freedom of expression, guaranteed by both the U.S. and Virginia Constitutions. The ACLU of Virginia is a vigorous defender of freedom of expression, including protecting the rights of demonstrators, the democratic process, diversity of thought, and so much more.
Since its founding in 1920, the ACLU has been involved in virtually all of the landmark free speech cases to reach the U.S. Supreme Court. Following that tradition, the ACLU of Virginia has maintained a principle-driven commitment to protect freedom of expression for all throughout the Commonwealth.
This commitment is particularly important in an era of ever-growing dependency on technology. As new technologies emerge, so do new challenges to free expression and we remain vigilant in preserving our rights and liberties.
