Changes in Virginia’s Laws: Marijuana

Marijuana laws are enforced more harshly on Black people and communities of color. Although some Virginia lawmakers claimed victory for “decriminalizing” marijuana, simple possession is still illegal. Only the penalty has changed. We will go over the new marijuana law that goes into effect July 1st, what your rights are, and what Virginia needs to do to have true equitable marijuana reform.

We will also talk about the newly released ACLU report, A Tale of Two Countries: Racially Targeted Arrests in the Era of Marijuana Reform, which details marijuana arrests from 2010 to 2018 and examines racial disparities at the national, state and county levels.
